now is 7:00. we're giving you a live look right now at the golden gate brin bridge, a little bit of fog there. if you're visiting, it's part ovt experience. thanks for wake up with us. i'm vicky nguyen. we'll get a check of the forecast with anthony slaughter. we went out to san francisco to enjoy the weather. women were out there in bikinis. >> i wouldn't be surprised if some of the guys were out there in the swim trunks. we had 71 degrees. today, will be warmer in santa cruz. if you were making plans like i was until my babies got sick. >> they do that to you. >> it is going to be another nice day. as vicky alluded to, a little bit of fog across the north bay. another day of big waves. high surf advisory does continue. if you were thinking about the beach, keep that in mind. it is going to be warm inland and san francisco.

delores park and one of those places that folks like to get out an sun bathe. it will be cooler, though, starting tomorrow. this will be the last day. we have to spare the air once again today because of unhealthy levels of air pollution, specially across the north bay. that's what will be the worse. you can see from our sky camera network, not too bad. a little bit of fog and haze. 73 for the peninsula. the tri-valley, 75 at the coastline. 71 degrees. it is really going to be spectacular wherever you go across the bay. take a chance. breath in that moderately clean air and enjoy the day. it is going to be a treat. >> we have rain in the air. 70s in january. you can't beat it. >> it is nice. >> thank you, anthony. flu season has not yet peaked. another person here in the bay area has died from the illness. napa county is reporting its first flu-related death of the

season. that is now five deadly cases here in the bay area. one flu death in san francisco county. one in sonoma and two in san mateo. all five were adults under the anyone of 65. doctors are urging people to get their flu shots, wash hands frequently and avoid tufouching eyes, nose, and mouth. all five lanes in sunnyvale are open after a fatal crash. a bicyclist died after colliding with a car on highway 85. it happened just north of the fremont on ramp. at about 2:30. when officers arrived on the scene, the bicyclist was pronounced dead. two lanes of the highway were blocked for three hours as officers investigated. wild boars, they rip up lawns and destroy them. this week, the san jose city council will decide on a controversial measure to

continue the trap and kill ordinance. they tear up lawns an homes as they search for grubs. in 2013, they were such a nuisance, the san jose city council set up an ordinance. since then, 14 pigs have been caught and killed in san jose. on tuesday, the city council will decide whether to continue that ordinance. right now, it is set to expire in february. >> we feel it is working. it hasn't caused any harms to y residents. we feel it is starting to work. we want to make sure it continues. city officials want to warn people, the law doesn't allow you to shoot a boar in your backyard. you have to hire a professional who has to follow specific rules for p traing and shooting the animal. a san jose teenagers is under arrest for a deadly shooting on new year's day. they took him into custody after he got off a flight no vietnam. he and another suspect shot two

men at the rain bar in south san jose. one of the victims died at the hospital, the other survived. police are now searching for that second suspect. after months of anti-police protest in the bay area, a march of a different kind this weekend. tens of thousands took part in an anti-abortion protest that shut down downtown san francisco. traffic came to a stand still around the embarcadero and civic center. the 11th annual walk for life event, drew opponents from across the bay area and across the country. it took place on the anniversary of roe versus wade, the 1973 supreme court decision that legalized abortion. it drew a smaller group of abortion rights supporters with both sides making their points clear. >> we believe in the beauty and the dignity of life. i think it is important to release the voice of the people

that want to vote for life. >> we are out here to oppose the mission of the march for life. >> recently, they tightened federal restrictions on abortion. they were warned that president obama would veto it. although tempers flaired at times. the event remained peaceful. medical marijuana is a huge and growing business here in california and this weekend, san jose is hosting one of the biggest industry conventions in the country. thousands poured in on friday to experience hemp con. it caters to people using marijuana. you can find the latest from marijuana ice-cream to the latest technology to grow it. turnout this year is larger than ever. >> we have hundreds of young entrepreneurs, new technology, all of this stuff is made in the

us. a. the cannabis smoked here is from california. >> the medical marijuana industry employs 100,000 californias. it points to benefits for people with aids and those suffering from ptsd. so far, it has overshadowed any super bowl hype. now, a new theory in so-called deflategate. this coming from bill belichick. the team has been under fire for allegedly using underinflated footballs at last sunday's game. some players like patriots quarterback, tom brady, find the underinflated footballs, easier to handle. belichick said he knew nothing about the controversy. yesterday, he offered a scientific explanation, blaming it on the weather. he says his teams simulated the exact condition as last week's

game when temperatures hovered in the 40s. >> we found that once the footballs were on the field over an extended period of time, they were adjusted to the climatic conditions, that they were down approximately 1.5 pounds per square inch. >> nbc news spoke with one physics professor says that the idea a drop in temperature can result in a drop in pressure is plausible. controversy brewing over what has become an expensive victory celebration for marshawn lynch. as football fans well know, he often makes a gesture that some may consider inappropriate when celebrating touchdowns. that is a no-go at the super bowl. the nfl has warned him. that gesture will result in a 15-yard penalty for his team. you can watch the super bowl right here at 10:00 with a

here is nbc's richard engel. >> reporter: isis seems to be changing the style of the hostage videos. this time, they posted a picture of japanese free land journalist, jihoto, holding a photograph of his fellow japanese hostage beheaded. in an auto message, goto says he will be next. isis isn't asking for money anymore. it is dropping a $200 million ransom that japan wasn't giving anyway. they want her, a failed suicide bomber who has been held in jordan for years. demanding her release, makes it clear that isis, although it may seem new, goes back to the american war in iraq. back in 2005, her husband stormed into a wedding party in a hotel in iman, jordan, blue up a bomb and killed nearly 40 week. it was sent by abu asad.

milwaukee. bomb squad served the planes but didn't find anything. >> we will definitely go back and track down the twitter feeds and try to track down who made the initial threats on twitter. >> authorities say the person who made the threats also tweeted, come get me, i got guns. come at me. >> the twitter account was from an address listed in chicago and an investigation determined the person behind the threats did not actually live there. the student film from here in the bay area that could land one filmmaker an academy award. we are waking up to some fog. a little bit different story from yesterday specially across the tri-valley. we still have a high surf advisory in effect for today if you are headed for some of the beaches. we are going to show you how warm temperatures are expected to be today coming up in moments.

a live look outside at sunol. another spare the air day. temperatures will hit 70 for some of us. google's next big idea may involve balloons. the fcc says to handle growing internet demand, it will open up new radio frequency. google says it wants to use balloons and possibly drones to connect more people to the internet. expanding access to the internet es important to google. they benefit when more people go online, stream videos or text on an android smartphone. it is likely a first for stanford, student film nominated for the most prestigious film possible, an oscar. a palo alto man that went from student to teacher. ian cole explains how the big nomination was a surprise. >> christian jensen's film,

is the first student film out of stanford to be up for an oscar. now, he teach a class on film there. next month, he will attend the academy awards with his wife. >> she is super excited. she is planning on what dress she will wear and i guess i have to get a tux that fits me. the envelope that i got overnight from beverly hills. where he will have that title oscar nominee follow him forever. adding another reward to the shelf would be fun. >> i think it will be a fun ride. i'll enjoy it while it lasts. >> reporter: ian cole, nbc bay area news. we'll be rooting for him. our very own meteorologist, rob mayeda, was honored last night at the lupus foundation of northern california's 30th gala. it honors people who have made significant contribution to the cause of lupus treatment, service and research. lupus is a debilitating autoimmune disease.

he was recognized with a purple ribbon for his commitment to awareness and his many years of service to the lupus foundation of northern california. >> we love rob here. he does great work here at the station and in our community. >> we'll bring in our other favorite here, anthony slaughter, with a look at the forecast. warm weather for january, you can't complain. we do need the rain. they say, how can you be so happy about 70s? >> we're trying to see the cup half full and enjoy what we have. we could be talking about snow, bitter cold, black ice on those roads. we are talking about record heat. we will start you off with some of the records we saw yesterday across the bay area. san jose, 72. hayward, 74. in oakland, 69 degrees. that was nuenough to set a new record. yesterday, a small ridge in across the bay area. today, you will notice that

ridge really has expanded across the pacific northwest. it is all denoted the cloud cover springing up towards the northwest and the north east. continuing through seattle towards portland. once you get around the area of high pressure, you get offshore winds. that's where we are this morning. we also have a little bit of fog out there this morning, up towards santa rosa and the tri-valley and the delta. otherwise, the fog will burn out quickly and we will see a very bright day. we are already seeing the sunshine in the south bay. a little bit starting to peek through. the north bay, patchy fog, specially once you come across marin county towards napa county. warm everywhere. 74, the north bay. tri-valley, 75. peninsula, 73. the warm spot will be across the south bay at 76. we have to spare the air.

the most unhealthy levels of air pollution across the north bay. everywhere else, good to moderate but still unhealthy if you are going to be outside and you suffer from respiratory ailments. >> from the north bay down towards the south bay, look what happens as we head through the day tomorrow. cloud cover starts to extend across the bay area. a storm system to our south is going to bring rain to southern california starting as soon as tomorrow. if you are going to be headed out to the beach today, do keep in mind. we are talking about a high surf advisory. this is where we will see some of the highest waves up to about 15 feet. look at that temperature. 80 degrees. oh, yes. i'm a little bit of jealous. frying to get out there and enjoy that. it doesn't start off rather warm in santa cruz. we will be in the 50s for the

first half of the day. temperatures really jump. we are talking about 78 by noon and 3:00. that's when you are going to see the most come forth believe weather. by 6:00, temperatures fall back into the 60s. it is going to be another warm day across the bay today. cooler weather for tomorrow. by tuesday, introduce that chance of rain here in the bay area because of that system to the south. it scoops up through the central valley. tuesday morning, 5:00, 6:00, 7:00 in the morning. tuesday morning, really, the only chance we will see shower activity. it will be very small amounts, trace amounts here. not a big system at all. we could use more. this is all we are going to get this go-around. enjoy the rest of the day. much more ahead. coming up, the motor city rolls into the bay

>> an all-american tech giant wants to put more technology into it's cars. the ford center is in palo alto just south of sanford near the lockheed martin and h.b. lab. business and tech reporter, scott budman says, more tech and more jobs are coming to silicon valley. >> ford has decided it will be the latest automotive giant to have a footprint here in silicon valley. that means new technology, new jobs and ideally, smoother, more convenient ride for you in the future. >> i'm controlling just the gas and the brake. >> for starters, a lot less stress when you park. gps finds an open space and then does the hart work to get you in. >> it does a three-point stop. it will tell me to stap here in a second.

>> even parallel parking, you go hands-free. >> the amount of technology we are putting in our vehicles, upwards of 50-60 car. ford says its move into tech heavy palo alto will mean more than 100 new hires focusing on things like remote driving, in this case, controlling a car in atlanta. >> as i turn my steering wheel, it gives me an indication of where i'm headed. >> reporter: and how tracking cars as they park can save you time and gas. >> there is traffic, maintenance more on this side could help balance that out or you need to address the situation. >> having those numbers will help a lot. >> a lot of numbers are flying here. data is a big reason they are parking in silicon valley. >> it was important to have them take advantage of the talent pool that's here.

second half hour of "today in the bay." we want to give you a live look outside at san francisco from our cameras in emoryville. it is a spare the air day. that is haze, not fog that you are looking through there. i am vicky nguyen who is standing by. anthony, we are talking about it earlier. beautiful, 70-degree weather. people out in santa cruz enjoying the beach. >> it's remarkable. >> you think about where we should be for this time of year in the 50s. usually, in the mid -50s. we're going well above that. a little bit of haze out there in san jose. you can see from our live camera, no fog. if you are heading to the beach, another day of big waves. up to about 15 feet. stay off the rocks and keep an eye on the little ones as well. it will be warm today. cooler weather is expected for tomorrow so this will be the last springlike day across the

bay area before cooler days and more cloud cover moves in for the start of the week. >> everywhere else, good to moderate levels. temperatures not too bad. we are in the 40s and 50s. 74 for the north bay. 71 in san francisco. the tri-valley, 75. peninsula, 73. the south bay, 76 degrees. i can't get enough of saying 70 something here this morning. it is just unheard of to talk about temperatures this warm this soon in the season. we have rain in the forecast, not enough but a little bit. >> looking forward to hearing about that. think about our friends in other parts of the country. on the east coast, getting ready for blizzard warnings and snow. here we are in flip-flops. >> it could be worse, right. god blesses us. we are in the middle of flu season. the illness has claimed yet another life in the bay area. napa county is reported its

first flu-related death of the season. that is five deadly cases in the bay area. one flu death in san francisco. one in sonoma county and two in san mateo county. despite warnings that flu is most severe in children and the elderly, all five bay area residents who succumbed were adults under 65. doctors are urging people to get their flu shots, wash their hands frequently and avoid touching their eyes, nose, and mouth. this week, the san jose city council will decide on a controversial ordinance that allows the capture and killing of wild boars. they have been known to tear up lawns and golf courses and homes in the south bay as they search for grubs. in 2013, the boars were such a big problem. they passed an ordinance to hire licensed trappers. 14 pigs have since been caught and killed. the city council will vote on whether to make the ordinance

the fines after pg&e failed to immediately examine and excavate pipelines that had signs of possible corrosion. they also found that nonqualified people were doing field work. the utilities pipeline system has been under scrutiny since the deadly pipeline explosion in 2010. they now have ten days to pay or contest the fine. after months of anti-police protests in the bay area, a march of a different kind. tens of thousands took part in an anti-abortion protest in downtown san francisco. they came to a stand still around the embarcadero and civic center as the 11th annual west coast walk for life through owe pope e pone ern opponents from across the country. it also drew abortion

barry errant, nbc news california judges will soon be banned from participating in the boy scouts. the state supreme voted to close a loophole to allow judges to join a group that discriminates. it doesn't allow openly gay leaders. they had excluded nonprofit youth organizations until now. 48 other states have similar bans. 21 statesm mention discriminatin on the basis of sexual discrimination. california judges have one year to cut their ties with the boy scotts. the young seattle seahawks fans who met some of his heroes when they heard about his disability and how he chose to cope with it.

potential republican presidential candidates are coming to california in droves. last week, half dozen potential candidates paraded before a wealthy group in palm springs. next month, chris christie will speak at the california state convention. is blue california going purple? larry gursten is here. let's take a look at that color chart. talk to us about why so many gop visits so early in the season? >> it seems early.

but, guess what? this is the primary season. already, it is the primary season. it is not the time where people vote for people. fort last six months, potential presidential candidates have been crossing the country. that's the time they test their popularity before well-known politicians and editorial boards. they are trying to gauge whether they have a reasonable shot at securing the republican nomination. the first contests are, yes, a year away. for now, most observers, they believe that hillary clinton is going to seek the presidency and that's led most potential democratic candidates to sit on the sidelines for the moment. golden state voters have made it clear, this is not a swing state. california has a history of

supporting the democrats but it is about the green, plenty here for gop. >> you are wearing the green for money. there is money here and lots of money here. in 2012, incumbent, barack obama, raised $62 million in california. he raised that himself. republican presidential candidate, mitt romney, raised $41 million in a state he knew he would never win but romney and obama, for that matter, used the money from california's atm in other states. there are a couple of other factors to consider as well when we ask why they are out here. attention. any republican candidate for president has an uphill battle in california where democrats outnumber republicans by a healthy 3-2. if a republican candidate can wage a good race, then the republican may advantage elsewhere. it is a 50-state race.

finally, organization capacity. presidential candidates hope that the friends they make today wilin there for them tomorrow. >> more specifically, the next presidential race. now, should mitt romney decide to run for the republicans, he doesn't have to start at ground zero? he has a base here from 2008, 2012. hillary clinton has a base here from her run in 2008. a lot of things to can are. >> it makes sense why the republicans would be pounding the pavement here in california. talk to us about the democrats. why is it so important? >> a key question. democrats must have california to have a fighting chance at capturing the presidency. this state's 55 electoral votes provide to% provide 20% of the electoral

votes. you can expect hillary clinton, if she decides to run, or others to come here to cement the vote. the last thing they like is to be take foreign granted. that's why democrats, as well as republicans must be here. >> all this trolling for votes, it seems early but we are well underway. >> like it or not, in this modern day politics, the next campaign begins the day after the last one. the candidates that jump to the front of the line, they don't do so by accident. they are meeting with potential suppo supporters, speaking at fund-raisers. peddling their latest books and splashing the front panels of newspapers, doing everything possible to gain that early advantage. much of this may be invisible to us. it is very real to them. >> we are starting to see a lot more signs of it.

welcome back. 7:53 the time. if you are thinking about it hadding the beach, specially after yesterday. clear skies. this area of high pressure has pushed all of the cloud cover up towards the pacific northwest. you can see the area of high pressure noted by the cloud cover off there. then, you have the offshore drive as those winds continue to come through the central valley and that big area of high

pressure that's keeping us so clear right now. that is going to continue to stay in place for at least another day or so. we have patchy fog. out there across the ohio valley. also, through the delta and up towards the north bay. everywhere else, waking up to clear skies. it is very isolated this morning. everybody else is going to see some shine along with the folks that are fogged in this morning. that's going to come in the next hour or so. that fog is going to burn out. 76 for the south bay today. 76, the peninsula. san francisco, 71 degrees. that's right near record-setting territory. records in the low 70s. north bay, 74 for today. everywhere will be very sunny and unfortunately, that air quality is not going to be the best. moderate to unhealthy levels. everywhere el everywhere else, good to moderate. we have that futurecast that
